The client wanted a way to easily identifying patients who may have sepsis and improve time to treatment (door-to-antibiotic KPI) times compared to their existing processes in the ED.
Sepsis is a life-threatening disease and cause of significant in-hospital morbidity and mortality.
Our custom solution was implemented in 5 ED departments and included the development of an early alert system in the eMR to detect patients presenting to ED with potential sepsis. Clinical decision support (CDS) is triggered at several key points in the patient journey for the ED Triage Nurse & ED Medical Officers to ensure that patients with potential sepsis are identified and treated as per clinical guidelines as soon as possible.
Outcomes following the implementation of this solution:
A 3-month post implementation analysis demonstrated a 75% sensitivity of the alert system and 99% specificity; this compares with clinician gestalt using the CEC sepsis pathway: sensitivity 45% and specificity 79%; a significant improvement for patient safety.
